I can’t WAIT for school to start!

This is why I never get my garden planted in the fall.  Once they go to school, hopefully I will have time to myself to be able to get somethings done!

Crape Myrtle

Wow… for something that I wanted to try to do weekly, I sure haven’t kept up with this very well the past couple of weeks.

A tour of the garden shows a lot of really exhausted plants.  A lot of them look somewhat sunburned – including my aloe vera.

Storm damage

There is so much work to be done and no time to do it.  I have already replaced some of the pots and replanted a few things. I think we will have lost a lot of plants, but maybe we can salvage some of them.  It makes me tired just thinking about it.

What a mess!

I spent the day trying to clean up from the tornadoes on Wednesday night.  I’m exhausted.  My yard looks like a lake once again and my new chicken planter was busted along with a few other planters.  I managed to get them replaced and I’m still in the process of clean up.  We have a fence to repair and the rose ladder needs fixing once again.  I think we should probably have someone out to look at the roof too.

But all in all, we were very lucky.  We didn’t lose any trees like so many did.  The damage was pretty much confined to the yard and not the house.  We are all still safe even though John was on the road (in a little hybrid Civic) during the worst of the storms – he even saw a tree up rooted in front of him and power lines going down beside him.  The kids were home alone and were magnificent.  They did exactly what they were supposed to do.

More clean up tomorrow, but I hope to make some real posts then with some pictures.  Then it’s off to Broken Arrow, OK for my high school reunion so what doesn’t get cleaned up tomorrow will just have to wait.  G’night!

What’s Blooming Today…

What a busy, crazy week!  I’m so ready for school to be out!  My garden NEEDS me.

Spring has taken it’s toll.  All the rain has made for lots of bugs and mildew, black spot and WEEDS!  As much as I love lemon balm, it is going to become a weed if I don’t get it cut back.  The lambs ear is the same… baby lambs ears everywhere!  The wild carrot should have been yanked out the minute I saw it, but there just always seemed to be something more important to do at the moment.  I just found out that it is one of the most allergenic plants growing in my yard.  That and Bermuda grass.  I hate that stuff!

I think summer is officially here though… well almost.  The sunflowers are not blooming yet, but other heat loving annuals and perenials are.  The cannas are starting to open and the crape mytles are blooming (one of them, at least).

We went outside last night for just a minute and the scent of the jasmine just about made us swoon – and all from just three tiny flowers.

OK… so here is this weeks list:

I don’t want to think any more…

KC Kitty is tired.

KC Kitty is tired.

So I’m going to let you do the thinking.  Here is a fun garden riddle for you.

Some fill me,

Some beat me,

Some kill me,

Some eat me;

I creep and I fly,

And my color is green;

And though I’m a season

There’s quite a good reason

Why my end or beginning

There’s no man hath seen.

Have fun figuring it out.  I will post the answer in a few days.

What’s Blooming Today?

Santolina

Santolina

OK… I said that I would make this a regular article on Fridays, but I didn’t say when on Friday.

Today has been devoured by work, errands, shopping, and last minute yard work before the rains come.  I think the rains have already started just a little bit.  I’m so glad I got the lawn mowed!  John even did the edging for me.

So, back to the topic at hand.  What’s blooming?  A lot of the same things from last week.  The new bloomers are the purple crepe myrtle and the four-o-clocks.  The Dahlberg daisies look like they are going to repeat their bloom – I saw one tiny, lonely flower.  The green beans are blooming now too… Sam is so excited!

Here is the full list…

  • Roses – I’m struggling to find the time to take care of them.  A few need to be sprayed for black spot and they all could use a foliar feed.  Hopefully next week will be more giving with the time.
  • ‘Homestead’ trailing purple verbena – seems to be finding it’s stride now.  Not the big flush of early spring, but still going.
  • Easter Lily – worth the wait.
  • Snapdragons – I wonder how long they will hang on this year.
  • Lamb’s Ear
  • Scarlett Sage
  • Peppers
  • Tomatoes – We haven’t harvested any yet
  • Borage
  • Poke Salad
  • Blackberry – Come on babies.  Come back to me!
  • Marigold
  • Pentas
  • Impatiens
  • Mealy Blue Sage
  • Bear’s Breach – Something has eaten most of the leaves, but the flowers are pretty.
  • Red Oxalis
  • Passion Flower Vine
  • Petunia
  • Calibrochoa
  • Sweet Lavender
  • Allysum
  • Santolina
  • Wild Carrot – I’m going to regret this one.  I should have gotten it out of there sooner.
  • Purple Lantana
    Green Bean Flowers

  • ‘Black and Blue’ Anise Sage
  • Pomegranate
  • St. John’s Wort
  • Cleome
  • ‘Sweet Kate’ Spiderwort

  • Russian Sage
  • ‘Honeycomb’ Buddleia
  • Coral Honeysuckle
  • Oxalis (Wood Sorrel)
  • Cucumber
  • ‘Confetti’ Lantana
  • Cilantro
  • Sun Drops
  • Yellow Squash

What’s blooming today?

Hollyhocks

Hollyhocks

I think I’m going to make this a regular article on Fridays so that I can keep track of what is happening in my garden.

So, for today, pretty much everything that was blooming last week is still going even if some things have slowed down.  The roses had their big flush and now we have just a few blooms on most of them.  The big exceptions are the climbing Fairy rose and the Red Cascade.  Mrs B.R. Cant, the Daybreaker, and the red rose that I took from Mom’s yard in Oklahoma which all still have quite a few blooms.

The strawberries have slowed down on the bloom, but the plants are growing to be huge with all the rain.  The Louisiana Iris seem to be close to finished also.  The snapdragons seem to be loving things, though.

The new things blooming are the daylilies (the smaller yellow ones), St. John’s Wort, the ‘Australian Skies’ anise sage, hollyhocks, ‘Sweet Kate’ spiderwort, the newly planted white impatiens and white pentas, and what I think is a Kamchatka stonecrop (or some other yellow flowering sedum).

So, what is blooming in your garden?
