Save Paul James, Gardening by the Yard Cancelled, HGTV == Bad | Backyard Gardening Blog.

I found this excellent post on one of the blogs in my blog roll.  Paul James is not only from the town I grew up in, but he is one of my gardening heroes and saviours.  HGTV just can‘t cancel his show!

Here is their justification for cancelling the show:

They said gardening doesn’t sell and only old people garden.

Well, at the ripe old age of 44, I will admit that I’m no longer a kid, but I certainly don’t consider myself OLD.  And I started gardening much younger than I am now so their justification just doesn’t fly.  And as the only true “gardening” show that they have on (after all, that’s what the “G” in HGTV stands for) you would think they would keep the only one they have.

If this bothers you as much as it does me, you can join me in the protest campaign here.

I looked for “Gardening by the Yard” a few mornings ago and couldn’t find it! This was the best show you had. There were already very few gardening shows (if any) so I had to get up extra early (I’m in central time) to see this one. Why is there not a balance of gardening shows on HGTV? There are way too many home decor shows. I’m so disappointed in your recent decision to nix Gardening by the Yard. I’m 49 years old, by the way. In an age where everything is “green”, why would you do this???

    My thoughts exactly!

I have watched “Gardening by the Yard” for years. I really like the tips and the jokes that Paul James has on the show.
What is going on with HGTV? It seems to have lost the HOME and GARDEN part of it’s name. I used to watch the craft shows (no more) and now the gardening shows (no more). Please bring back the HGTV that we all loved.

Thanks for commenting, Vicki. I’m hoping that, with enough outcry, HGTV will change their mind. And if not, maybe Paul James can find another nationally syndicated venue.

I have been watching Pau; James forever… what, how… why would you cancel one of the best gardening shows ever?????? How could you do this. He is the best and had awesome ideas and input. He could answer all kinds of gardening quesions, and to boot he was funny. HGTV you really need to put him back on we need him.

I found your blog on google and read a few of your other posts. I just added you to my Google News Reader. Keep up the good work. Look forward to reading more from you in the future.
    Thanks,

Hey Joe! I’m glad you found it. It has been a slow week this past week, but I should be back to full steam soon once I get my mother moved.

I love Paul James show.. It was the only one on HGTV that I watched on a regular basis.. Maybe if you didn’t have set your alarm to watch the show it would have done better. Tomorrow I call my cable company to see how I can get DIY TV. HGTV has turned into just another network that just wants to sell houses for the real estate industry.

  • Rhonda says:

I also loved Paul James and Gardening by the Yard.. I don’t know what happened to HGTV.. Its all about selling real estate. Where are the craft shows? Where are the gardening shows? I forgot I cannot afford in this economy to spend $100,000 to redesign my kitchen.. I’ll call my cable provider to see how I can get the DIY network.. HGTV is not for me anymore. I don’t have millions to redo my house asnd I don”t sell real estate.. I loved this network when it first came on. What a pity corporate America does not listen to its viewers..

I had wondered what happened to this wonderful, and entertaining program. I learned so much from him in a relaxed setting. I alwasy kept a little notebook near to jot down things that I wanted to rememeber. HGTV has a lot of programs that cater to the well-to-do, but this was for the ordinary person who enjoyed gardening. He taught me it is ok to pull something out if it doesn’t do well, and try something else. How can we bring the show back?

  • Marianna says:

I’m with Rhonda…what happened to the H and G in HGTV? It is ALL about real estate, and virtually nothing about home and garden (unless you are buying or selling!)

I used to watch for the gardening shows and the craft shows…which are no more. Bad move.
And…by the way, I became an avid gardener at 20 years of age!!!
